(ODD ASIDE: 2013-05, I was in Steglitz
(Berlin) and went into an expansive used bookstore on Albrechtsrasse ...
looking for either/or James Ellroy (“LA Confidential”) or Jim Thompson books …
and found “After Dark, My Sweet.” Never
heard of it … )

Also bought a Charles Bukowski book – “Hollywood” … about
the filming of “Barfly” … but that’s another story.

“After Dark … “ follows the books very well … the
characterizations are spot-on, if not even better. Bruce Dern of course plays “Bruce Dern” to a
“T” … no other actor would approach his insincerity and smarminess. The part of the doctor was perfectly handled
by George Dickerson … with an obvious touch of manipulative unsavoriness,
indeed.

Collie mentioning “playing crazy” reminded me of Jack
Nicholson in “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” … with similar non-uplifting
results!

Having read the book prior, I pre-knew the story’s thread
but was stilled pleased how well the darkness and Salton Sea/Indio/Mecca/date
farm desert locale fit.

I like to unearth “best movies you’ve never seen” and, in
particular, Film Noir(s).Anthony Telliernoreply@blogger.com
